How to Run a Business from Your Kitchen Table

Author: Barbara Gabogrecan

“If you have been retrenched or want to get back into the work force, but can’t find a job, the business you’ve worked so hard to build just isn’t working, or if you are simply sick of working for someone else, this book will provide a solution,” says the author of ‘How to Start a Business on the Kitchen Table’ which has been written by the acknowledged guru on Micro and home based business, Barbara Gabogrecan.

The book is written in two parts. Part 1 covers topics that can make your business successful and is peppered with case studies of actual businesses that have started on the kitchen table. The down to earth approach of the author shows that she, too, has experienced the problems of starting a home based business and is prepared to share solutions. Many existing businesses would do well to benchmark their business against the topics covered here.

Part 2 lists dozens of businesses that are suitable for running from a home base, with marketing tips, approximate set up costs and skills necessary for running each business. The innovative reader will take some of these Marketing strategies and apply to their own business.

“With 62% of all small business in Australia being run from home, it is not surprising that I receive hundreds of phone calls asking me can I suggest a business idea.” said Gabogrecan “It was these requests for help that led me to write the book.” But Gabogrecan knows that just having a good idea is not enough. “If no one knows about your product or service you will not succeed. Marketing is the key to having a successful business.”

The introduction to the book is fascinating, as it outlines Gabogrecan’s life, starting with a unique childhood and leading to a profession that she lost when retrenched. How she started her Art business and the fantastic success she had, led her to create the Micro Business Network, a not for profit ‘self help’ association for the smallest of small businesses. The Network currently has 20,000 on its data base, testament to the success of this second venture.

Gabogrecan clearly believes that the home based business sector will continue to thrive and may even exceed its current 4% per annum growth. She points out how Government is in danger of strangling this growth because of their ignorance, outdated legislation and often disinterest – and she should know, as she sits on a number of Federal and Local Government committees where she provides a voice for the sector.

“Government has the resources while the Micro and home based business sector have the ideas – the entrepreneurship. Imagine what the outcome might be if we combined these powers” said Gabogrecan.

If you are a youth looking for an alternate career path, if you are a Mum wanting to get back into the workforce or if you just want to be your own boss, ‘How to Start a Business on the Kitchen Table’ is a must.
